Right now, the National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism or the NIAAA is trying to combat the problem of alcohol addiction with focused efforts to defeat it through science. One of the ways they are doing this is by analyzing the data. Using science to defeat addiction does not simply mean that scientists and researchers are developing a pill that addicts can take to get well again. Instead, researchers are starting to focus their efforts on data collection. For example, they are looking at when and why college students binge drink. They are examining how often those with post traumatic stress disorder drink to soothe their nerves or avoid feelings. When correlations are found here, there can be further tests taken to examine whether or not there is also a direct link. Finally, scientists and researchers are also trying to actually identify the molecular basis of why alcoholism occurs. Scientists want to know who becomes an alcoholic later in life and why. Could it be genetic? Recently, the NIAAA found a series of important genes that were integral to neuroinflammatory actions, and these neuroinflammatory actions were keyed up when animals drank excessively. This finding could open new doors for researchers down the line as they continue using science to defeat addiction.
