If you think men drink more than women, you may have been right. But that fact is changing. According to an article on nih.gov, "a recent analysis by scientists at the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), part of the National Institutes of Health, indicates that longstanding differences between men and women in alcohol consumption and alcohol-related harms might be narrowing in the United States."
Based on analysis from 2002 to 2012, the "differences in measures, such as current drinking, number of drinking days per month, reaching criteria for an alcohol use disorder, and driving under the influence of alcohol in the past year, all narrowed for females and males," the article reports. "Males still consume more alcohol, but the differences between men and women are diminishing."
The increase in alcohol consumption by women is cause for alarm, as women are at a higher risk for liver inflammation, cardiovascular disease, neurotoxicity and cancer, all of which can be tied back to alcohol abuse.
These reports also found that men, while they drink more than women, have actually started to consume less alcohol than in the past. The report found that "the percentage of people who drank alcohol in the previous 30 days increased for females from 44.9 percent to 48.3 percent, but decreased for males from 57.4 percent to 56.1 percent between 2002 and 2012. Over that time, the average number of drinking days in the past month also increased for females, from 6.8 to 7.3 days, but decreased slightly for males, from 9.9 to 9.5 days."
As for students, binge drinking for women ages 18 to 25 drinking increased, while it decreased for men. Across the board women are drinking more and more and it's starting at a young age. Why? Makers.com suggests its because of the competitive workforce where drinking is not only a social activity, but also one that often times relates back to their jobs. Meetings often end in a round of drinks. The article goes on to say, "As women entered the workforce in greater numbers, their social habits began to look a lot like those of their male colleagues."
As women make progress their stress levels are increasing and they are turning to alcohol as a solution. But the real solution is finding the coping techniques to deal with stress. If you or someone you know has a problem with alcohol due to stress at work, school or home, consider therapy and rehabilitation as an option and a true solution.

The rich text element allows you to create and format headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, images, and video all in one place instead of having to add and format them individually. Just double-click and easily create content.
A rich text element can be used with static or dynamic content. For static content, just drop it into any page and begin editing. For dynamic content, add a rich text field to any collection and then connect a rich text element to that field in the settings panel. Voila!
Headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, figures, images, and figure captions can all be styled after a class is added to the rich text element using the "When inside of" nested selector system.
