Peyote is a small cactus containing the hallucinogenic compound known as mescaline. The top of the cactus appears as a crown and is called a "button." Peyote and mescaline are most commonly abused through chewing the fresh or dried buttons of the plant. They may also be ground into a fine powder and placed inside of capsules.
This hallucinogenic substance can be extremely habit forming. Abuse of the drug causes varying degrees of hallucinations and illusions. Altered perception of space or time as well as altered body image often occurs as well. Many users experience euphoria while taking this drug. This feeling is often followed by extreme anxiety. Physically, this drug may cause intense vomiting or nausea. It causes dilation of the pupils as well as increased heart rate. This drug also increases blood pressure and raises the temperature of the body. The raise in temperature leads to heavy perspiration, muscle weakness and headaches.
This drug is most directly related to other hallucinogens such as LSD or mushrooms. It is a Schedule 1 substance and is classified as having a high potential for abuse. There are no currently accepted medical treatments for this drug so it is only obtained and distributed illegally. Like other hallucinogens, this substance can quickly take over the life of an addict. Because of its high potential for abuse and the ease with which habits can be formed around the substance, it's not uncommon for people addicted to this drug to become financially unstable. The mood swings and negative bodily effects this drug causes may place unnecessary strain on the interpersonal relationships of the suffering addict as well. With proper addiction treatment, people addicted to this substance can find the help they need to assimilate themselves successfully back into their community. Successful addiction treatment often takes the form of treatment at an outpatient facility. Addiction treatment at this type of facility means that addicts are free to go home at the end of the day. During the hours they are not at the treatment center, they will often have 12-step programs to work while at home. As more people gain freedom from addiction, our communities become stronger than ever. Together, we can remove the stigma surrounding addiction and recovery. If you or someone you know is struggling with peyote or mescaline addiction, reaching out for help may be exactly what you need to become set on the path to a healthier life. Contact Freedom From Addiction today for more information about peyote, mescaline and addiction treatment. We can help.
