Methamphetamine (meth) is an extremely addictive and harmful stimulant chemically similar to amphetamine. It can be taken orally, snorted, smoked, or dissolved and injected. Methamphetamine travels to the brain quickly to produce an immediate and intense euphoric feeling. This feeling often fades quickly, causing users to binge on the substance.
Methamphetamine users actively engaged in abuse are often referred to as being on a "run." This drug often needs to be taken more frequently as use continues, causing many users to go without food or sleep while they binge. Users may take as much as a gram of this substance every few hours over many days until they either run out of the drug or have been awake too long to function.
Long-term methamphetamine abuse often leads to extremely damaging effects coupled with severe addiction. Chronic abusers often exhibit very violent behavior as well as confusion, insomnia or anxiety. Many users experience psychotic effects such as aggression, visual and auditory hallucinations, and delusions. The sensation of insects creeping on the body or under the skin is often associated with this drug. Small amounts of this drug have the ability to induce increased wakefulness and physical activity. Appetite is often reduced by this drug while breathing and heart rate are increased. High doses have the ability to elevate body temperature to sometimes lethal levels. Cardiovascular collapse or death may result from frequent usage or overdose.
Proper addiction treatment for meth abuse is absolutely crucial. This drug is not only extremely addictive but also can easily cause fatalities. Treatment at an inpatient facility is often highly effective for overcoming a meth addiction. Inpatient facilities are often the safest place for addicts who are addicted to meth to detox. Detoxing properly from this substance is extremely difficult, with the beginning withdrawal symptoms normally manifesting as soon as the last dose has worn off. At inpatient facilities, addicts can receive the care they need to begin their journey to freeing themselves from addiction. The extremely addiction nature of this drug makes ensuring those in need receive proper addiction treatment absolutely critical. Each year, more and more communities are destroyed by meth. If we work together, we can remove the stigma surrounding addiction and encourage those in need to reach out for help. When people gain freedom from addiction with proper addiction treatment, our community becomes stronger. An addiction doesn't have to run the rest of your life.
